Rosli Mansor "Dragged"

It is known that there are many types of nonverbal communication and they can be applied in almost every situation. I was looking through some photos taken from an artist's album launch and I spotted some quite interesting nonverbal communication cues from those pictures.

From this photo, it can be seen, that artist, Rosli Mansor was smiling very brightly when he was signing autographs for his fans. This is a form of kinesics; affect display, for his display of emotions was mainly facial expression. Just by using a very sincere smile, Rosli managed to bring across his message of gratitude for his fans support.

Of course, nonverbal communication does not always occur one at a moment. Within an action or situation, there might be more than one type of nonverbal communication cue displayed simultaneously. Just as seen in the photo on the right, Rosli is shaking his fans hands; effectively using haptics (study of touch in communication) to establish the artist- fan relationship between both of them. It is to diminish the idea of an artist being somewhere faraway and untouchable. Hence to say, the use of touch drew them together.
In addition, the artist used oculesics (study of nonverbal meaning associated with the eyes) to show how he treats his fans with importance. He had direct eye contact with his fan which symbolised attention and respect. This would also increase positive association between them.

This is a group photo of Rosli and his fans holding to his posters, Rosli Mansor "Dragged". These posters are objects which are representation of the artist Rosli and his album "Dragged". To a certain extent, tangible objects are influential to our decisions, and by using objects to convey non-verbal messages, Rosli have created a certain kind of personal identity and status of him and his music. Therefore, it can be seen that nonverbal communication cues can be extended to the artifacts around us and not just facial or body language.
The use of space (proxemics) and the arrangement of this photo also convey the different status among all of them. Rosli, being situated in the center shows that he has a higher status as compared to his fans and that he is the bond among the rest of the people. Besides, he is the main focus point of attention, the star.

Based on all the little bits of nonverbal communication cues I get from the above photos, I draw the conclusion based on closure (an organisational principle) and my past experiences with him that Rosli Mansor is a very good musician with endless number of fans but never let the fame get into him as he still treat everyone with respect.

All photos taken from Rosli Mansor album launch "Dragged".
Many thanks to Rosli Mansor and management for allowing me to use their photos.

Indeed many non-verbal communication can take place at one time. Verbal communication can not do this and that is probably the reason why non-verbal cues make up the bulk of communications.

However, we should interpret non-verbal cues with as many cross references as possible in order to achieve the fairest interpretation that we can come up with.

Non-verbal communication plays a major part too when trying to bring something across to the receiving party. This is because just by doing it verbally does not convey your emotions fully, that's why communications often are accompanied by body languages and eye contacts.

An interesting approach, using a music artist's launch to interpret and bring across all the different forms of non verbal communication.
good examples, and clear examples for the layman.
kudos to you!

wa! you know Rosli Mansor? you so popular!

being an artist means you need good inter-personal skills in order to create good rapport and be well liked by the public.

unfortunately, we sometimes see artist practising the skills of positive non verbal communication to elicit the emotions they want. they may not be sincere or interested in the person they are having the conversation with. alas, that is the sad truth about the world we now live in.

An insightful write-up. I also liked that you used this particular scenario of an artiste interacting with his fans. More often than not, it's a scenario where superficial verbal communication takes place. Only non-verbal cues (that cannot lie) can lift it beyond such superficiality. Indeed, there is a sincerity and genuineness in Rosli's body language - something you picked up!

Just a thought: Rosli's music doesn't involve lyrics or words... can it be considered a form of non-verbal communication? :)

those are merely still pictures taken. unless we're physically present at the scene or have a video clip of it, we will miss out on the verbal communication that takes place in sync with the non-verbal communication that took place.

but these pictures made a very important point. that non-verbal cues plays a much larger role in communication compared to verbal cues. without the verbal cues, we're still able to infer emotions that were felt there and then.

however, non-verbal cues may be interpreted differently by each individuals as we attach our personal meaning to each gesture.

A very effortful analysis! I don't really know who Rosli Mansor is, nor have I had the opportunity to appreciate his music. But from your write up, he does come across as a very warm, affectionate, and sincere guy.

It made me felt so happy and I could not believe what was happening at that time, I have always thought that I wont have a chance to meet face to face and that we are so far apart.

Yuanheng brought up an interesting point. Rosli's music does not involve lyrics.. I supposed that can be considered as a form of non-verbal communication too.. I'll look further into that..
